I am leading morning teacher devotions @ The Branch Christian Academy. I really love being with our teachers. I like being with people that are joyful and teachable. I want to be teachable. The following verse speaks to the reason we all need to remain teachable:
Proverbs 14:6 (AMP) A scoffer seeks Wisdom in vain [for his very attitude blinds and deafens him to it], but knowledge is easy to him who [being teachable] understands.
Scoffers love to point out problems. They are usually identified by all the things they are against. I want to be identified by what I am for. I want to be part of the solution not just an identifier of the problems. Being teachable is vital to receiving from Jesus. But how do we build a teachable spirit?
Proverbs 15:32-33 - He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding. The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.
Humility will take an honest look at yourself. Can you honestly ask yourself, "How do I respond to correction?"
People that hate taking advice are the kind of people Proverbs 15:32 is speaking about. They get bent out of shape when they are corrected, or believe that they are being attacked.
Below are 7 identifiers for those that are insecure in their identities and often not willing to take advice from others:
- They are constantly comparing themselves to others.
- When someone corrects them they get defensive.
- They won't take advice from people not like themselves.
- They are the kind of people that are constantly trying to prove something.
- They may tend to lie to make themselves look good in front of others.
- They are ashamed to let others know who they really are.
- When they are corrected, they typically feel rejected.
...just love it that you led with Proverbs. I seldom read Proverbs until I met the Branch ...
