There is a buzzword that has been buzzing about the church planting world for quite some time. It is the recently and uniquely coined term... "Unchurched." Well, it's not that unique. I recall a 7UP commercial touting the lemony-lime elixir as the UnCola. Then there was the Toni Braxton hit song titled "Un-break My Heart."In fact, slapping "Un" in front of a word has been around a while.
The suffix un- can mean either a reversal of action, like unpack, or the lack of some quality, like unknown. A prime example of this is with unlearn, which means to reverse learning, and unlearned, which means the lack of learning. Sometimes in a sentence the meaning of un-made words is unclear and unsettling. Jim WegrynRegardless, this buzz word often shows up in mission/vision statements of new church web sites in various forms such as:
- "Fresh Vision Church is going after the unchurched."
- "Relevant Revival Refuge or R3 is called to reach the unchurched."
- "Here at (insert any cool word here) Church we are a missional community of relevant Jesus followers and we will invade a post modern society by hanging out at Starbucks to gather the... unchurched."
But consider the absurdity of this term being used anywhere other than the church...
"Hi, my name is (insert heathens name here) and I am unchurched. May I come to your church?"I grew up playing hockey in the North. When I was about ten my family moved South where very few boys my age played hockey. Did that make them Unhockeyed? And if so, should the North send missional communities to the South and get them hockeyed before Jesus returns or Wayne Gretzky finds out?
Call me old school or unmodern, but can we just go back to "sinner" and ditch unchurched? Maybe it's less offensive to stick with the latter, but essentially what we have done is create more church only lingo or "Christianese" that further alienates us from the world we are trying to reach.
Consider 1 Timothy 1:15-16 (New Living Translation) This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.
One need only replace "sinner" with "unchurched" to see how ridiculous that verse sounds! Leave it as is and you find a way to relate to people that you used to be just like.
But if we Church planters are really honest with ourselves we should acknowledge that although our demographic my indeed be the unchurched, we don't intend for them to stay that way. We want to get them churched! And by churched I mean vitally connected to the Body of Christ by means of the saving grace of Jesus. Oh, and hopefully tithing!
At the Branch we are doing our part to get 'em churched as young as possible. The proof lies in a recent event where my three year old niece walks into Chuck E. Cheese & exclaims, "Look
Mommy, Chucky Jesus has a miracle-go-round!"That's what I'm talking about! She walked right in and churched that unchurched Chucky.
sinners and unchurched are not good synonyms.
ReplyDeleteI go to church, I sing in the praise team...shoot, my days are filled with helping the church.
But I'm a sinner.
Have you read the book UnChristian? The first chapter talks about the term and how it actually refers to those that don't go to church, church isn't a part of their life, focus, etc. We call them the lost, sinners, etc. and yet those are all our terms, a term they don't understand. How do you think they feel when we call them lost and yet they don't see themselves as lost at all, they know exactly where they are headed (and no they don't think they are headed to hell).
I love where you're trying to go, but I'd encourage you to look at things from the outside in...and if you haven't read UnChristian it's a must read.
Be blessed.
That's awesome! Well said, but so politcally incorrect :)
ReplyDeletei like using the term "outsiders". we're in, God wants them in, but they are currently out.
ReplyDeleteLuke 5:31 (MSG)
Jesus heard about it and spoke up, "Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? I'm here inviting outsiders, not insiders—an invitation to a changed life, changed inside and out."
Love it Scott! Outsider is a much better term. But it seems to conflict with Michael Buckingham's "sinner" comment above.
ReplyDeleteAccording to his logic he is still an outsider.
I prefer to let Jesus do the talking for us insiders and He calls me the righteousness of God. I won't argue with Him!
Here's the comment I tried to leave on your note on FB...not sure if it posted anything--my computer is kinda flippin out:)
ReplyDeleteYes Derek!!! Ok this term "unchurched" has bothered me for quite some time but I've never taken time to figure out why. I think it's the fact that "churched" would imply that someone simply goes to church...the "Unchurched" simply do not go to church. That seems extremely surface level and not at all about a relationship with Jesus which would hopefully be the ultimate goal of our mission as Christians on the earth. I think maybe we need to coin another term and call it, to reach the un-relationshipped:)
Great post!!
Thanks Whitney! Barna defines unchurched as those who have not attended a church service in 6 months. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unchurched
ReplyDeleteThe reason the term bothers me is because those going after the unchurched seem to consider themselves successful only when the unchuched start attending THEIR church. I prefer loving people into a relationship with Jesus and then letting them decide where they want to be Churched
Guess that makes me the UnPastor!
There are plenty of people sitting in church that have no relationship with Jesus.. They are considered Churched and they need to be reached also :)
ReplyDeleteI continue to be "unchurched" thanks to ministers and church members who tend to be "overzealous" and continue to tell me I'm demon - possessed, need to have my "spirit of deafness cast out", or "lacking in faith" because I have not received "healing from deafness". But, after going through this for so many years, I just couldn't take it anymore... Read More. I'm tired of being told I'm not good enough because I'm deaf and have been since I was 5 years old. I don't know anything else and its a part of me. Why do church people always want to change me instead of accepting me for who I am?
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that Cathy. Sounds like you have been going to the wrong Churches. The real Church expresses who Jesus really is and He accepts you exactly as you are. But don't let hypocrites keep you out of fellowship with other Christians. Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us to not neglect meeting together. But make sure you are meeting together with people... Read More that DO what verses 24 & 25 say... think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works and encourage each other.
ReplyDeleteRemember that Jesus got the same treatment from religious wackos. It's always a huge red flag to me when people say things like you have heard. Jesus didn't identify the problem... He fixed it!
